Why did the ISBN change occur?
The change was needed in order to expand the numbering capacity of the ISBN system and alleviate numbering shortages in certain areas of the world.
Sometime in 2007, it is likely that some publisher’s books, in some part of the world, will be assigned the ISBN-13/EAN-13 with the new '979' prefix. These books will not have corresponding ISBN-10s.
Also, by changing the ISBN to 13 digits the book industry fully aligned the numbering system for books with the global EAN.UCC identification system that is widely used to identify most other consumer goods worldwide.

PGW is fully ISBN-13 compliant.
Through much of 2006 PGW identified and prepared systems and processes for the transition to ISBN. In November 2006 PGW was officially able to conduct business in both 10- and 13-digit ISBN formats.
Since both publishers and accounts are in varying states of preparedness for the change, PGW will continue to receive and communicate information related to ordering, billing, returns and other queries supporting both formats throughout 2007. PGW also includes both dual number packing slips and invoices.
In addition, we will display both ISBN-13 as well as ISBN-10 on our web pages, catalogs, advertising, and other sales and promotional materials.
